Download the Ekpeye Folktale Ebook "Eyolukanyi" (Ancient Wisdom)
This book titled Éyolukanyị̀ is a unique compilation of Ekpeye tales, proverbs and a short dictionary. The Ekpeye are an Igboid ethnic group from Rivers State, Nigeria.
The idea for this project came up in July 2022, as the experienced language diversity activists Franca Umasoye Igwe and Julen Villarreal Moreno began discussing the possibility of carrying out a project in favor of Ekpeye language and culture.
Soon, Tony Vincent Ijere, an Ekpeye language instructor and expert of his native culture, joined the team, and was followed by Roberto Barbero Goñi and his students as well as by the artist Angela Moreno. In November 2022, the Gesellschaft für bedrohte Sprachen (Society for Endangered Languages, University of Cologne) awarded the project a grant, which allowed to finish the book and print it.
The goal of this publication is to help preserve the oral heritage of the Ekpeye people. Traditionally, Ekpeye literature is transmitted orally but modernization has weaked its transmission. Thus, a physical format such as this book can help safeguard and promote this patrimony. As of 2023, there seems to be a positive shift regarding the use of native languages in Nigeria, which is home to hundreds of languages. Hopefully, this book can help developing Ekpeye schooling and literacy by making a culturally-rich contribution to Ekpeye education.
