Symbols of Beads in Ekpeye Culture
May 2, 2025The Speak Ekpeye Fluently Language Initiative is proud to announce the launch of its Ekpeye Language Classes, a groundbreaking effort to revitalize and promote the Ekpeye language among both native speakers and language enthusiasts. As part of our ongoing commitment to cultural preservation, these classes are open to all and completely free of charge.
Ekpeye, one of Nigeria’s many Indigenous languages, has a speaker population of over 200,000, with fewer young people able to speak or understand it fluently. In response, this initiative aims to bridge the generational gap by providing structured, engaging lessons that teach not only vocabulary and grammar but also proverbs, folktales, and cultural expressions unique to the Ekpeye heritage.
“Our language holds the key to our identity and worldview. Revitalizing Ekpeye is not just about communication, it’s about reclaiming pride in who we are,” said Franca Umasoye Igwe, Founder of the Speak Ekpeye Fluently Language Initiative.
Classes will be conducted online to ensure accessibility for participants all over the globe. Learners will have access to trained facilitators, interactive learning materials, and a supportive community of fellow learners.
Highlights of the program include:
Weekly lessons tailored for beginners and intermediate speakers
Use of audio-visual aids and traditional storytelling
Opportunities to practice speaking with native speakers
Special cultural immersion sessions
Whether you’re from the Ekpeye community or simply passionate about Indigenous languages, this is a unique opportunity to connect with an ancient linguistic tradition and become part of a movement to keep it alive.
Registration is now open at: https://bit.ly/ekp_lessons
